This book is an excellent companion to the authors' book "Children Tell Stories." That book helps adults set up and develop kids' storytelling programs in a very comprehensive manner. This book provides stories with which to do this.

The stories are arranged by difficulty, with excellent telling suggestions alongside the text of the story. Some are even set up for tandem telling, which I find kids often want to try, but struggle to find a way to make it work.

The stories come from a variety of sources, and they are all guaranteed to please at least one of the kids in your class or group who wish to tell. As one who has coached many middle-school kids to tell their first story, I find these stories to be excellent in helping those kids who are just not sure how they should proceed. I highly recommend it for kids who want to tell and the adults who nurture this desire in them!

As an elemntary teacher, I love this book. The book contains 30 stories representing different cultures with clever plots and defined characters. This versatile book is written for beginning storytellers but can be used in the classroom in several ways. The delightful stories are great read alouds that teach students how to develope characters and build experience for their own writing. The easy to use stories encourage the natural storytelling talent of childres who love to perform. The guide along the side helps with expressions and voice inflections allowing the students the confidence to develope their own style. Another benefit of this book, although probably not the intention of the authors, is that it builds the skills reguired for the NYS 4th grade ELA exam. Students learn techniques of using storyboards, listening for details and identifying major events and seguences of a story. This is a classroom must.

If you teach storytelling to children, you'll want a copy of this book. The first 18 pages, addressed to the kids, explain how to choose, learn, and perform a story. Then follow 30 tales laid out in mouth-sized pieces, with parallel columns suggesting gestures and vocal intonations to use. Ranging from fables and folktales to short literary gems, all are appealing and accessible to the beginner. At the end of the book is a section for adults, giving both pedagogical arguments and practical suggestions for ensuring success for young tellers. Detailed source notes and additional story suggestions round out the grown up section. Hamilton & Weiss have distilled excellent advice from their 16+ years experience working with young tellers. I think self-motivated students could use this book on their own; but an adult, using the content and tone of the authors' sections addressed to children, will be equipped to start a youth storytelling group with confidence.

I first became acquainted and fell in love with the work of F.Scott Fitzgerald when I read a hardback copy of The Great Gatsby in my early 20s. Since then, I have read Tender Is The Night and This Side of Paradise, so when I discovered this collection of stories by my literary hero, I floated up to the cieling. My favorites include The Diamond As Big As The Ritz and Bernice Bobs Her Hair, and anyone who has not already been introduced to Fitzgerald, either in English class at school or while browsing in a local bookstore, it's not too late to change your mind, and it is my sincere hope that you will love this man's work as much as I do!

I was delighted to find out that not only were F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories being narrated on audio cassette, but that one of the performers was none other than Robert Sean Leonard. Scottie is by far one of my favorite American authors. It takes an incredible talent to condemn the life you live in your literature, and when I think how he strived for excellence but fell victim to society, I can't help but pity him. His writing is so delicious to read as well. He has such wonderful similies and metaphors, and is so descriptive I can taste the wine, feel the rain and see the stars. The Jazz Age is one of my favorite time periods and F. Scott Fitzgerald captures it perfectly. You see the glittering side but then the glitter gets tarnished as it must. What is even better about this audio is that one of the narrators is none other than my favorite actor, Robert Sean Leonard (better known as Neal in Dead Poets Society and Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing among other films). His voice is wonderful to listen to, even if you're not a fan of his acting. It's perfectly clear and flowing and it reminds you of listening to your parents reading you a bedtime story. The tape itself leaves you feeling as if you've been on an emotional rollercoaster. There's a nice beginning, then it peaks with conflict, the resolution, and then the end finishes as calmly as it started. Yet you've gained something from it. Fitzgerald has some incredibly phenomenal themes in his work. The odd part is that I usually don't like getting audio books, but I certainly reccomend this audio of The Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald" It's worth every penny.

Surely an icon in the annals of American literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald produced a body of work which epitomized the Roaring Twenties. It has been said that his dominant influences were "aspiration, literature, Princeton, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, and alcohol." Nonetheless, his writing possesses an urgency, a bite, unrivaled by his peers.

Collected in this superb audio are nine of his early stories performed by accomplished actors. Broadway/film actress Blythe Danner reads "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," a narrative inspired by a lengthy letter Fitzgerald wrote to his younger sister, Annabel, in which he offered advice on how she could become popular with boys.

"The Jelly-Bean," read by Dylan Baker, takes place in Georgia. Fitzgerald credits his wife for her expertise in helping him write a portion of this tale involving crap shooting, saying "as a Southern girl" she was an expert at this endeavor.

The talented Peter Gallagher reads "Head and Shoulders," the first of Fitzgerald's story to appear in The Saturday Evening Post.

Also found in the collection are "The Diamond As Big As The Ritz," "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," "The Ice Palace," "Benediction," "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button," and "May Day."

This is an exemplary combination of memorable prose and oral presentation, a remarkable listening experience.

Having marveled at the tapestry I purchased from Simply Tapestries, I went to the Museum of Modern Art to see their recent exhibit of Flemish tapestries. This book can almost act as a companion of this exhibit. I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the full color artwork. This book is a must for anyone who has purchased or intends to purchase a tapestry. The authors are obvious experts in their field. A wonderful art book of the highest quality. I learned so much about the history of these wonderful pieces of art.

I had no idea how important a medium tapestry was prior to stumbling on the Met exhibition during a recent visit to NYC and then reading this book. I was amazed to learn the amount of money spent to produce (and purchase!) them, and how important the industry was to the economy of the time . Anyone who thinks of tapestries as beige, boring and historically insignificant is in for a surprise.

As for this book itself, the photography is stunning and lavish. Each time you look at one of these magnificent works you see something new--it's hard to believe that these are woven objects, the detail and color is so vivid...no wonder the NY Times listed it as a holiday gift buy. (I think they rated the accompanying exhibition one of the year's best too)

This collection depicting the tapestry exhibit recently held at the NY Met Museum is an indisputable gem. Entries are consise and thorough. Photographs are well done, some a bit too grey, but overall usable to all textile artists.
Well worth the price and a steal at Amazon's price.

I have read this wonderful book many many times to my 2 year old grandson. I finish reading it and he wants it read again. We are on our 6th week of checking it out at the library. I will probably purchase this book. The words flow like a song and he is getting to the point where when it says "the cow looked at me and the cow said ___" he fills in the "moo" part. The illustrations are equally as good. There is so much detail and objects to see that it takes many readings to take note of all of the details. I enjoy reading it as much as he enjoys listening. We are currently searching for other books by this author.

This book is fun a rhythemic. My one year old daughter loves when I read it to her. She puts her fingers on my lips and just watches my mouth move in amazement. It is a book you can read over and over again.

Predictable repetitive rhyming text begs for a child to participate. Large colorful illustrations hint provide hints for what comes next. A great book for the younger set, not to mention a little humor for the adult reader.

This is a beautifully written book about 43 soldiers killed in Vietnam .The book takes you into their lives , so you really get to know them and the people they left behind .Very heartwarming . It makes you laugh and cry .

The Wee Scot is a beautiful book that, with its lilting poens and comforting illustrations, really captures the heart of Scotland.It really made me fall in love with the country and my Scottish heritage. I would reccomend it for anybody who wishes to learn about their heritage, or who wishes to visit Scotland but can't. This book is the next best thing.

Aileen Campbells Wee Scot Book is one that kids from 1 to 100 years old will enjoy. As you read the ancient Doric script (along with the English translation), your immediately wisked away to the Highlands of Scotland. The tape on which she reads her poems and other verses as well as sings with accompanyists on the bagpipes and dulcimer, is perfect to listen to as you enjoy her warm and beautiful watercolors that illustrate the words. A must have for anyone who enjoys a touch of good old fashioned nursery rhymes whether your a Scot or not!

Aileen Campbell, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland has collected and illustrated, as only she could, many familiar poems and stories with deep roots in Scottish heritage. "Wee Willy Winky" and the like, put down with love and care by her hand will live as long children need bedtime stories. This item is highly recommended for young parents and "young" grandparents alike who want to pass along to their prodigy the favorite stories of their childhood. If you want to really get crazy, check out her cassette version of the book...her beautiful, lilting Scottish brogue will aboslutely melt your heart

Most books seems to be written for and about widows, with perhaps a few pages about how the experience might differ for men. But this book is ALL about men -- their words, their stories, and commentary by the authors. A particularly helpful list of resources in the Appendix.

This booked helped me look at different ways men handled grieving and seen myself in some of the men. I seen that I wasn't crazy to have all these emotions and knew that I wasn't the only one going through this. It really is a great book for widowers to read and understand what they are going through.

Each widower should read this book in which the authors list interviews with twenty bereaved men and analyze the results. A friend of mine gave it to me three months after my wife died. I was depressed and had just started couselling sessions with a therapist. The book provied me with a great deal of insight on how other men were dealing with the most devastating loss of their lives. I recommend it highly

Great set of tapes from a lecture given by Campbell on Joyce. Also available as video tape set at many college libraries. The book "Mythic Worlds, Mystic Words, Joseph Campbell on James Joyce" contains much of the lecture and more. Great in all formats !

Only Campbell could make Joyce seem so accessible, and he was eminently qualified since he spent a good portion of his life studying Joyce. The first 5 minutes are a billiant summary and distillation of a writer who is broader and more universal in his scope than anyone since Shakespeare. The only slight downside is the occasional throat-clearing and other noises that are part of a live recording, but it's a minor distraction. Five tapes might seem long when you start, but you'll wish it was longer when you're done.

Joseph Campbell coauthored the classic Finnegans Wake reference Skeleton Key, and in these six tapes of an informal lecture to a small audience he presents another tour de force encompassing his analysis of Portrait, Ulysses, and Wake.

He delivers Joyce's theory of art, (alone worth the price of the tapes), relates the texts' themes to mythology and philosophy, and generally provides a wonderful sense of James Joyce as a brilliant man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, who labored mightily to bring forth the Big Three. Perhaps even on a level with Stuart Gilbert's "James Joyce's Ulysses".

These tapes are a great buy for anyone interested in Joyce.

This is a great little book. Reading it won't give you a master's degree in Shakespearean studies, but it will give you a quick and interesting overview of many different subjects. The chapters are brief and topical: a discussion of Shakespeare's origins in Stratford, life and politics in Elizabethan England and London's theatres offer a fascinating glimpse into Shakespeare's world and works. The second section of the book, "Documents", looks at some of the primary sources for our understanding of Shakespeare, both documents from Shakespeare's life (a contract, his will, the First Folio), but also writings by those who saw the original plays, discussions of theatrical productions through the ages, and criticism by centuries of academics from John Dryden's 17th century analysis to modern feminist approaches.

The Age of Shakespeare is the perfect weekend read for those who want a bit of context about the plays and their origins. It is informative without being heavy. The dozens of color plates and illustrations are gorgeous, and the writing is intelligent and clear. A wonderful sampler

The book, The Age of Shakespeare, takes my breath away! The many color prints and illustrations add beauty to a informative book. This is a well thought out book about Shakespeare and his times. I really enjoy reading it.

This was a non-stop action, suspense filled whirlwind of sights and emotions. I felt as if I was on the boat with the characters; who were deep and well thought out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an adventurous and exciting ride. Look foward to the next installment.

Reading "All's Fair" was like taking a weekend vacation. I was able to spend time at the beach, on the boat, and the adventures were never-ending. The book is fast and easy to read and is the best I've read this year. If you like John Grisham, Patricia Cornwell, or James Patterson, you will love Tim Campbell. This really should be made into a movie. To boot, it has one of the most torrid scenes ever! Whooo!
